Recent Event Recap

The December QT and Annual Business Meeting at Aurora:  hosted by Aurora Code Enforcement Dept.  We had a great turn-out, terrific training, and elected one new member to the Board of Directors in addtion to other changes in Board positions.  Many members received some wonderful door prizes just in time for the holidays and we also "gave back to our communities" by participating in the 10th annual "Joy Drive".

The 2011 AACE National Conference held November 1-3, in Nashville, Tennessee.   This year's conference was held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center.  What a great location and a good time for all.  Colorado was well represented with 6 from Commerce City and 1 from Fountain.  Save the date for next year's conference to be held Oct. 29 through Nov 2, 2012 in St. Charles, Missouri .

September QT  at Ft. Collins:  hosted by was co-hosted by Code Enforcement Departments of Ft. Collins and Larimer County.  Over 90 members and guests were attendance.  Highlights of the day's agenda included sessions on reacting effectively with personality disorders, a discussion of municipal vs county code enforcement diffrences, and dealing with "sovereign citizens".  A special treat was comic relief by one of our own members, Caleb, who regularly performs professionally at comedy theatres.

Members also brought enough various animal food and health care items to overfill a table.  These items were later donated to local animal shelters in need of assistance.

Finally, a number of great door prizes were awarded for member's submissions of "Best Excuses Heard On The Job".  The grand prize awarded was a White Water Raft Trip for Two!  A wonderful QT, many thanks to our hosts!

Colorado Illegal Waste Tire Cleanup Grant Program Abatement List Development & Outreach Initiative

The Colorado General Assembly passed legislation in 2010 (HB 10-1018) concerning waste tires that have been illegally dumped or abandoned.  This legislation created a program designed to provide grants to counties and municipalities for expenditures related to the disposal, recycling, or reuse of the waste tires.

Due to the extensive field knowledge of their own jurisdictions by Code Enforcement Officers, the CDPHE is asking the assistance of CACEO members in providing much needed information on locations of illegally dumped, collected, or abandoned waste tire sites. The information received  will be entered into an abatement list for cleanup prioritization.  Click here for copy of Outreach Letter received by CACEO

For more information about the illegal waste tire cleanup grant program click on the following link:  http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/oeis/wtprog/wastetire.html this also contains a link that will direct you to the Department’s Illegal Waste Tire Cleanup Program for Counties and Municipalities application which will be available on a year-round basis.

Fountain Code Enforcement Helping to Clean Up City One Step at a Time -by Patricia St. Louis, Fountain Valley News / El Paso County Advertiser, 9/28/2011

To those who think Fountain’s Code Enforcement Officers have nothing to do but enforce property codes and respond to complaints around the city, think again.   (for the full story, click here.)

Even the Grim Reaper can't escape HOA or code enforcement.  -by Bill Vogrin, Colorado Springs Gazette, SideStreets, 5/25/2011

Officials approach sovereignty group's leader with caution.  -by Tom Morton, Casper Star-Tribune, 4/19/ 2011

For years, he fought the city over the junk in his yard, which led to his unsuccessful court fights in which he asserted property codes - developed for the health, safety and welfare of citizens - stem from communism and Nazism. He also argued the city and courts have no authority over him.

Code red.  Nine people are charged with keeping the city livable. That gets a little messy.  -

You can't see the house from North Circle Drive. It's hidden at the end of a crumbling driveway at the heart of an unkempt thicket.  This is David Pitts' third stop of the morning, and one of the code enforcement officer's more fascinating cases. The old man who had lived in this Sand Creek house had been a bit of a hoarder, and an amateur builder. In the backyard, he had built a ramshackle series of sheds, certainly with no code in mind, that he had used to store his lifetime collection of memorabilia and random gardening equipment, and some trash.

Colorado Medical Marijuana Regulations Now Officially Law:   John Ingold | 06/ 7/10 03:57 PM | AP

DENVER — Colorado has enacted statewide regulations for the medical marijuana industry which could potentially allow hundreds of dispensaries to continue operating.  Gov. Bill Ritter on Monday signed two bills passed by lawmakers this session to rein in the estimated 1,100 medical marijuana dispensaries that have cropped up around the state.  Both laws take effect immediately. One allows only doctors in good standing to recommend medical marijuana. The other sets up a uniform set of rules for marijuana dispensaries as well as growers and makers of marijuana-infused snacks preferred by some patients.
